Do you always choose your toothpaste based on how it tastes? Is it always about picking the mint flavor or the one that claims to keep your mouth fresh for longer in the advertisement? Or, are you one of those who like to buy toothpaste (or gel) that has a cool color? If you buy your toothpaste like this, we have news for you. The chances are high that you are not buying the right product for your oral condition. Toothpaste is more than just good taste or a cool look.

There are a few kinds of toothpaste available in the market which serve different purposes. Based on your oral condition, not all toothpaste may be the right one for you. So, how to decide what kind of toothpaste you require for your oral condition? Here is what you need to know.

Fluoride

Fluoride is the most important ingredient in toothpaste and almost everyone needs it. Fluoride helps in fighting tooth decay which is a common problem in the majority of people. As we consume a lot of starchy and sugary foods daily, it helps in bacteria build up in our mouth. Bacteria feed on sugar and all kinds of starchy food. This escalates the plaque buildup in our mouth and results in acid growth. The acid causes significant damage to our teeth, especially the enamel.

Fluoride not only protects the teeth from acid decay but also makes the enamel stronger. Fluoride also helps in rebuilding the decaying areas. It is extremely important to check if your toothpaste has fluoride in it.

For Sensitive teeth

If you have sensitive teeth you need to pay attention while choosing your toothpaste. There are specific kinds of toothpaste that help in controlling sensitivity. These kinds of toothpaste contain strontium chloride or potassium nitrate which protects the openings which were created due to decay. As the openings are rebuilt the nerves are less exposed to the foods and drinks we consume. You will start experiencing less sensitivity while drinking or eating hot or cold food or beverages.

For Tartar Control

Plaque buildup in your teeth and in between your teeth is bad. It not only causes acid build-up but also creates more problems. If we don’t treat and get rid of plaque in time it will harden with time. This hardened plaque is called tartar which causes damage to our teeth and gums. Tartar can cause serious damage to the gums and leads to gingivitis or periodontitis if not removed early.

There are other types of toothpastes, like charcoal toothpaste, whitening toothpastes which are marketed well these days. However, not all work what they claim to be; at least there is no proper evidence to support their claims. A few whitening toothpastes do whiten your teeth if you use them for a longer period. These toothpastes contain whitening agents which work but slowly.

It is important to brush twice a day, as well as floss once daily to maintain good oral hygiene. It is also recommended to wash your mouth properly after every meal. When you are buying toothpaste for yourself and your family makes sure you are buying what you need and not what you want.
